OSHA Settlement Highlights Dangers Faced by NJ Retail Warehouse Employees

Online commerce and big-box stores depend on warehouses around the country that store and ship merchandise. Many of these facilities are located in New Jersey, where workers do their jobs unseen by the public. While these high-volume fulfillment centers are vital to companies like Amazon and Wal-Mart, they also pose significant injury risks for workers.

Over the past few years, fatalities have been reported at three different Amazon warehouses in New Jersey. Concerns about hazardous working conditions at facilities operated by the online retail giant led to an OSHA investigation and subsequent settlement. The review covered sites in 10 states, including New Jersey, with a high incidence of workplace injuries. As part of the agreement, Amazon will pay a fine, install companywide ergonomic safety measures and allow government inspections at their plants.

In high-throughput warehouses, repetitive reaching, twisting and heavy lifting can cause various types of workplace injuries, particularly when workstations are not adjustable or items are stored at awkward heights. Specific conditions associated with this type of employment include musculoskeletal problems, back and shoulder injuries, torn ligaments and repetitive motion disorders. Lift assists, height-adjustable tables, better bin placement and conveyor redesign are all potential ergonomic improvements.

Along with the everyday strain of their jobs, warehouse workers also suffer serious, and even fatal, injuries from accidents that occur. Employees are frequently struck by forklifts and falling merchandise. Aggressive production standards contribute to slip and fall incidents as workers hurry to complete their quota.

If you’ve been hurt while working at a warehouse or somewhere else, report the injury and request a medical evaluation promptly. Speak with a knowledgeable lawyer about your specific job duties and the events leading up to your injury. Workers’ compensation should cover your medical expenses and part of your lost income without any proof of fault. However, if your employer failed to comply with workplace safety regulations, or a third party was liable for your injury, additional relief might be available.
